David Axelrod - former senior adviser to President ObamaDavid Axelrod, the chief political strategist for both of Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns, has been hired by NBC News as a full-time political analyst. He will appear on news programs for NBC’s broadcast network and for its cable news channel MSNBC.

Axelrod’s hiring at MSNBC echoes Fox News’ hiring of Karl Rove, who filled a similar role for George W. Bush. George Stephanopoulos, who advised Bill Clinton, joined ABC News and became the host of Sunday’s This Week before joining Good Morning America.

Axelrod, 58, is a native New Yorker who began his career as a journalist, working for the Chicago Tribune. He began in politics in 1984 and founding Axelrod and Associates, a media and consulting firm.

Despite close ties to Hillary Clinton, he ultimately decided to work on Obama’s 2008 campaign, tellingThe Washington Post, “I thought that if I could help Barack Obama get to Washington, then I would have accomplished something great in my life.” On Nov. 20, 2008, Obama named Axelrod as a Senior Advisor to his administration, a role he had until Jan. 28, 2011 when he stepped down to run Obama’s reelection campaign.

Axelrod most recently was named political director at the Institute of Politics as the University of Chicago, his alma mater, and a Distinguished Fellow at the Harris School of Public Policy.
